Come welcome the arrival of Fall on September 8, 2010 when World History (Seattle) and Yarn Forest (Denver) sanctify s00kr33m’s. Get invited – click here.

World History began in the winter of 2006, as a collection of songs written and recorded aboard several boats in Seattle, Washington. The project has since evolved into a laughing, stomping, yelping collaboration between Neil Campau and Jamie Menzel. They most often write songs about historical characters and events that are rarely talked about in compulsory school textbooks, and their lyrics provide hints of their anarchist anti-politics. Campau provides the majority of the vocals, alternately strumming his rusty autoharp and breaking guitar strings, while Menzel lends her soft vocals and intricate flute melodies, and from time to time, breaks something in a percussive fervor. Whether performing a raucous, triumphant historical retelling or a foot-stomping sing-along, World History continues to captivate audiences from living room to back porch.

Yarn Forest, aka William Jiles, has a mesmerizing, ethereal sound that saturates the room.   Its like magic and mist and moss and the occasional woodland fawn.  In fact, I think his act could even pull off a fog machine (and I mean this as a compliment).  Obviously, I encourage you to come and hear for yourself.  But in the meantime, here are some nice tracks, below–!

Check out the song Syndication on Yarn Forest’ Myspace. It’s my new favorite song.

Despite it being a Monday night show, lots of folks piled into s00kr33ms to hear Dewi Sant- one of Back40′s favorite bands, and the first ever to play one of our shows. [..]

On January 31, 2010, Dewi Sant became the first band to play at s00kr33m’s in Boulder, CO. About 30 concert goers came out for the performance and somehow fit themselves into my tiny apartment. After the show, as the band packed up their instruments, Michael Morris, lead singer and guitar, told me he’d soon be back to the region to promote some new songs he was working on. Well, just a little over six months later he’s back in Colorado touring again.

Pollination Population, powered by Kate Ersing, has been busy since she last performed at s00kr33m’s in late March. She has played numerous shows in Denver, including sets at the Underground Music Festival (UMS), the Larimer Lounge, the Walnut Room and even made a late night appearance at the last BackForty show in Denver.

These two bands will be performing at s00kr33m’s on Monday, August 16, 2010. Come enjoy yourself and make friends.

It’s not easy fitting three bands into a 1,000 square foot, 1-bedroom row house. We found this out on a recent balmy night when BackForty Presents hosted The Western Front, The Wandering Bears and Spirits of the Red City at s00kr33m’s. [..]

Have you been to Iowa City? I haven’t. It’s OK if you haven’t either, because Iowa City is coming to Denver, and so is Minneapolis. Both The Wandering Bears and The Western Front are from the  City of Literature. Also, a last minute confirmation from a Minneapolis based band, Spirits of the Red City will make the evening extra special. [..]

Erik got off the plane at DIA on Thursday and headed straight for Boulder to play a show at Ash House. It rained. The following day he played the 1st BackForty house show at n3wkr33m’s. He played originals. He played covers. He played Wild Horses. [..]

The snow that had fallen earlier in the day had melted by the time people started showing up for the BackForty show at s00kr33m’s featuring Denver band Dream Wagon and Boulder singer-songwriter t.mule.

Dream Wagon – Dead Man

Dream Wagon and Friends will be traveling up from Denver to grace us Boulderites with fabulous sounds of enchantment. The show will be starting promptly at 8pm on April 29th, at s00kr33m’s.  As always, there will be plenty of surprises. Come enjoy the festivities with us…

Dream Wagon is a core trio that often features guest players who bring a different flavor to the band’s charming sound, which reflects the aesthetics of folk and indie pop but isn’t really either. If anything, Lindsay Thorson, Allison Sheldon and Emily Hall craft the sort of songs one shares with a few close friends, perhaps singing together around a campfire.

The sun was melting into a gorgeous early spring evening as people started trickling in to s00krEEm’s place on Sunday, March 28th. Peace, Loving and Pollination Population carpooled from Denver and arrived a little after 5pm with a car full of musical goodies.  Bug, the house artist for the evening, showed up around the same time to hang up scores of her colorful sketches, turning the living room into an eclectic, intimate den. Strands of Christmas lights began to glow white, red and multicolored throughout the room as guests mingled, the musicians unloaded their gear and the sun sunk behind the Flatirons.

Once the stage was set and the sun had disappeared from the sky, the music began with Pollination Population, otherwise known as Kate Ersing. Kate’s set was subtle, gorgeous, haunting. Her unique voice held the room in near-rapturous silence.  She accompanied herself simply on guitar and with loops of noise and sound she cued on some old tape decks.  It was a truly wonderful set, and I’d recommend any Denverites to check out this local gem.

Peace, Loving closed out the evening with what I can only describe as – well, how would you describe it? A magical, musical, cacophonous journey perhaps just brushes the surface. The Boston based band have used seemingly anything they could find laying around to craft their sound- harmonicas and bird whistles, banjos and tape players, bouncing pennies and spoken word, homemade chimes, a bicycle wheel, even a block of wood and a hand saw. Being in the room as they unfolded their set almost felt like being a part of a sonic painting, you didn’t so much listen as *experience*. And what an amazing experience!

As would be expected, the night had some twists and turns, but ultimately it was just what we were hoping for – a celebration of good art and good company. We want to thank both bands, Bug, our featured artist for the eve (whose work is still up for viewing over here at s00krEEm’s, if you ever want to stop by for a beer and a looksee) and everyone who came out to enjoy the evening with us. We had a lovely time – we hope you all did too.
