I’ve been a fan of Matt and Kim since I first heard them while living in Brooklyn back in 2007. I love their simplicity. Neither Matt, nor Kim are talented musicians, but they possess an energy not many bands can match. They recently released a new song from their album Sidewalks, which is scheduled to be released on November 2nd. After listening to the single I have to admit I’m a bit disappointed.  “Cameras” demonstrates a clear progression to a more complex song structure – doing so they’ve lost their energy that got me excited about the band in the first place. Take a listen for yourself by clicking here. Would love to hear what you think. [..]

Earlier in the Spring Nathaniel Rateliff played a BackForty show at Flapjack’s in Boulder. Joe Sampson showed up with Nathaniel and joined in a couple songs and played a few of his own. The walls shook that night. When I ran into Joe Sampson, who also plays with the ambient/electric/folk group Wentworth Kersey, this weekend at the Larimer Lounge it wasn’t long before I asked him to at BackForty once again. Mr. Sampson obliged and will be playing at sOOkr33m’s on September 28, 2010 along with Manners from Portland, ME. [..]

It’s funny how these things work out. You host a band. they have a good time. They tell their friends to play your house show. That’s how MANNERS, a.k.a. Greg Beson, heard about BackForty sOOkr33m’s. His friends Peace, Loving, from the Whitehaus Collective in Boston, told him about the venue. As a result, MANNERS will be performing in Denver on August 28. [..]

Grand Hallway - singer/multi-instrumentalist Tomo Nakayama and a cast of some of Seattle’s finest musicians. Their lush, melodic chamber pop songs evoke influences such as Andrew Bird, Sigur Ros, and Nina Simone. Since their inception in 2006, the octet have self-released two full-lengths (2007′s “Yes is the Answer” and 2009′s “Promenade”), and an EP (“We Flew Ephemera”, 2008). “Yes is the Answer” was also released in Japan by Sideout Records (Bright Eyes, Nada Surf, Cursive, The Velvet Teen).”

I picked up this video from Facebook last week. I don’t remember who posted it. After watching it again I felt it was worth sharing with others. I like the ADHD feel of the video and the song sounds a bit Dylanesque? (Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that.) What do you think? [..]

It started with the release of The Mumford Sons’ Sigh No More. Then, The Spirits of the Red City performed at one of the best house shows I’ve attended. I’m on an indie folk kick. I love the mobility of the music, the closeness between the musicians and it feels 100% genuine. [..]

Sure, it would be great to tour all year long, zip zapping across the country to sold out shows or hosting the premiere indie acts at your blogspot, like Daytrotter. But, for those of us whose cookies didn’t crumble just right, well, we abide. We make the best with what we got. We get day jobs to pay the bills and hit the rock clubs/house shows/art galleries at night. [..]
